They are used for transferring data (internet, email, streaming music and video), as remote weather stations, for remote tracking, and many other applications. While Cellular networks are becoming more ubiquitous worldwide, different communication standards and protocols (such as GSM and CDMA) are used around the globe. Even cellular networks in the United States use different standards and frequencies.
